Pete, my husband, particularly enjoyed listening to this whilst decorating recently! The Unthanks bring their unmistakable harmonies and storytelling to Middlesbrough Town Hall, accompanied by the Royal Northern Sinfonia and joined by English Teacher, Jodie Nicholson and Philip Selway. Songs rooted in the North, given the full orchestral treatment, definitely one to listen to while it’s still available.
The Summer Book
If ever there was a film for the last weeks of summer, surely this is it. Based on Tove Jansson’s much-loved novel, The Summer Book follows a young girl and her grandmother (played by Glenn Close) spending the summer together on a tiny Finnish island. It’s a quiet, beautiful story about family, grief, nature and the relationship between two generations and the scenery alone has us sold.
Studio Rua at Winter’s Moon
A little newsletter exclusive for you! We’re very excited to share that Ruth from Studio Rua is returning this October for to sell instore and also run a jewellery making workshop in our studio and you’re the first to hear about it. You’ll spend the session shaping your own pendant from wax before your design is cast in bronze or silver and returned to you as a completely unique necklace. The last workshop was such a lovely one, so we’re delighted to have Ruth back.
One for the diary! The Plant Fairs Roadshow returns to West Dean Gardens on 13 September, bringing together specialist nurseries in one of our favourite local settings. Have a wander around the plant fair, then make a day of it with the walled gardens, glasshouses and arboretum. And September is a very good time to get something new in the ground...
How to Get to Heaven from Belfast
It's been out for a little while but in case you missed it, it's a good'un! Three old friends reunite after the unexpected death of the estranged fourth member of their teenage gang, only for some very strange things to start happening at the wake. Part comedy, part thriller, part amateur detective story, it’s funny, dark and full of brilliant characters. We got thoroughly sucked into this one.
Artist and illustrator Jackie Morris has the word ‘entrance’ written on her studio floor, a reminder that her job is to make people stop and look. In this episode of Ffern’s Found Sounds, Alice Boyd visits Jackie at her home on the wild Pembrokeshire coast to talk about art, nature and her belief that we’re not separate from the natural world, but part of it. A lovely listen.
